"Respite to the caregivers is key to
the program so we can keep people
[with Alzheimer's] at home," Blumberg
said. "This program has to be flexible
in terms of caregivers' needs." Members
of focus groups — most of them peo-
ple caring for spouses with Alzheimer's
— told COJES "they wanted to keep
their relative at home, but 24 hours a
day is too much."
The Peter and Dorothy Brown
Adult Day Care Center, which also
will be operated by JHAS, will accept
Medicaid reimbursement and offer
scholarships and transportation to
those who need them. Ideally, clients
would stay for a minimum three hours
per day, Blumberg said, but they may
spend an entire day at the center.
Therapeutic activities will range from
arts and crafts to field trips to music
therapy to exercise to baking and
cooking. Psychological and medical
therapy also will be available, as will
personal care services like bathing.
The center will share Fleischman's
kitchen and serve a daily kosher
lunch.
"Everything becomes a therapeutic
activity — even meals," Blumberg said.
The agencies under the COJES
umbrella -- JHAS, Jewish Family Ser-
vice, Jewish Community Center, Jew-
ish Federation Apartments, Jewish
Vocational Service and Detroit Med-
ical Center-Sinai — will offer support
to the caregiver in the form of in-
home support services, counseling and
referrals.
Focus group participants told
COJES that their primary concern
was that their loved ones wouldn't be
sitting around all day with nothing to
do. They also wanted a Jewish pro-
gram and the option of a meal. And,
they said they'd be willing to pay
between $20 and $60 per day, Blum-
berg said.
- She estimates the cost of the pro-
gram at $250,000 annually. COJES is
seeking grants to help support the new
center.
Margot Parr, executive director of
JHAS, estimates that half of the Club
in the Plaza program participants will
require the care the new center will
provide.
Dubin and Miller are relieved that
the day care continuum will be
extended. But both are focused for the
time being on becoming better
providers for their spouses.
A caregiver, Dubin said, "must have
patience, compassion, tolerance and
more patience." ❑
