LONNY GOLDSMITH Staff Writer BILL HANSEN Photographer 0 n a cold, blustery Sunday, on the frozen tundra of Birmingham Groves High School, a football game was played. But not just any game. It was the Yiddish Football League's championship game: The Matzah Bowl. Down 3-1 late in the game to Bob's Behemoths, Chudow's Chumps scored twice late, and again on the first possession of overtime, to win 4-3, and claim the coveted megaphone. Game MVP and team captain Evan Chudow caught three touchdowns, and had an inter- 12/5 1997 76 ception, with Rick Hawkins catching the game winner. His quarterback Jeff Eisenstadt threw four touchdown passes. Behemoths' quarterback Tim Newman threw three touchdown passes in a losing effort. The YFL is a four-team league that runs for 12 weeks; the last two are playoff games. This is the tenth year the guys in this league have played together. "They get so into it for this game," league commissioner Mitch Cicurel said. "During the season they are pretty mild-man- nered, but they get up for this game."
