Ophir took over the Home Front
Command just as the Saddam
Hussein-sparked mad rush on gas
mask distribution centers was easing,
after it appeared that diplomacy had
ended the three-week standoff
between the United States and Iraq.
The Home Front Command hopes
the flow will remain steady at about
5,000 a day. Before the crisis with
Iraq, about 2,000 people a day report-
ed to update their gas masks.
The current crisis caught the
Home Front Command without a
commander, since Ophir's predeces-
sor, Maj.-Gen. Shlomo Arad, retired
from service nearly three months
ago.

Buenos Aires (JTA) — A bank vault
in Brazil that is believed to contain
looted Nazi gold and jewelry is expect-
ed to be opened.
Rabbi Henry Sobel, a member of a
commission searching for gold looted
from Holocaust victims, said his com-
mission hopes to discover who the
valuables belonged to.

Ministry has begun to investigate the
importers and marketers of a steroidal
hormone, DHEA, on suspicion of
advertising false claims that the non-
prescription product is a ministry-
approved "revolutionary cure for
impotence."
DHEA stands for dehy-
droepiandrosterone, which is naturally
secreted by the adrenal glands, but the
pill form is, in most cases, synthetic.

Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y., and Rep.
Christopher Smith, R-N.J., urged
Romania to block moves to pardon six
members of that country's wartime
fascist government.
In a letter to Romania's president
the two lawmakers warned that the
pardons could negatively affect
Romania's bid to join NATO.

Memorial
To Victims

Athens (JTA) — Greece unveiled a
memorial to the nearly 50,000 resi-
dents of Salonika that died in the
Holocaust. Some 40 Holocaust sur-
vivors attended the ceremony. About
1,000 Jews now live in Salonika.

Affirmative
Action Case

New York (JTA) — A New Jersey
school board agreed to an out-of-court
settlement in an affirmative action
case that was expected to yield a land-
mark ruling from the U.S. Supreme
Court.
The Piscataway school board agreed
to pay $433,500 to Sharon Taxman, a
white teacher, whom the board laid off
in 1989 while retaining a black
teacher with equal qualifications. Civib
rights advocates, who paid part of the
settlement, feared the high court's rul-
ing could have led to a dramatic
reduction in the use of racial- and
gender-based preferences.

Menorah Display Ban
Unconstitutional

Los Angeles (JTA) — The city of
Beverly Hills, Calif., has lost the latest
battle over a menorah display in a
public park.
A U.S. district judge ruled that a
Beverly Hills ban on displaying a
menorah for more than two consecu-
tive days is unconstitutional.

Sydney, Australia (JTA) — A legal
opinion prepared for an Australian
prosecutors' office contradicts claims
by the Australian government that it
cannot deport individuals convicted of
crimes against humanity if they have C.
been permanent residents or citizens
of Australia for more than 10 years.
The opinion could affect the case
of Konrad Kalejs, a member of the
Arajs Kommando mobile killing unit
in Latvia during World War II. -
