itous attacks on those of us who are
conservative. The reality that Mr.
Hermelin, President Clinton and
many liberals fail to see is that a
majority of Americans believe in the
large majority of conservative princi-
ples that have allowed for the very
"rise of the right wing" that so terrifies
him.
Like the rest of us, Mr. Hermelin is
a person, not a deity. There is nothing
in Mr. Hermelin's background that
makes him an exceptional choice for
the position of ambassador to Norway.
Moreover, this is now a man in the
public sphere, given that he is a presi-
dentially appointed office holder. Yet
you do not offer even a hint of probity
in your article. If this were a Bush or
Reagan appointment, I have no doubt
that the tenor would have been very
different. Think about it.

Regarding WTVS ("Channel 56
Takes Heat" Nov. 21), finally some-
one steps up to anti-Israel, anti-Jewish
propaganda (if not anti-Semitism)
and the Jewish Community Council
objects. The least it could have done
was withhold comment.
Maybe it's time for the Jewish
Federation to quit funding the
Council. I, for one, haven't the foggi-
est idea what it does, or for that mat-
ter, the ADL. When was the last time
either of these organizations displayed
leadership when Jews were attacked in
the public arena?
I can list numerous issues on which
I expected some public action by
these organizations and was disap-
pointed at their lack of backbone.
Now, we finally have four organiza-
tions with the courage to stand up and
be counted and the Council sides with
a TV station which admits it aired a
slanted piece of propaganda. We can
make better use of Federation dollars.

Guidelines
Were Ignored
Regarding the call of four Jewish
organizations to withhold funds from
WTVS-56 ("Channel 56 Takes Heat"
Nov. 21), David Gad-Harf, executive
director of the Jewish Community
Council says he already sent a mes-
sage with his resignation from the sta-
tion's board. Talk about being self-
serving.
In all due respect to Mr. Gad-Harf,
I doubt whether WTVS is devastated
by his resignation. This is not intend-
ed to take anything away from Mr.
Gad-Harf's talents, but I am sure he
can be replaced.
As for preparing guidelines for air-
ing documentaries, I can't believe this
suggestion comes from a liberal orga-
nization. No self-respecting news
institution would tolerate such inter-
ference — and it shouldn't.
But he and his council miss the
major point. Guidelines exist. They
are called fairness, balance and
responsible journalism. WTVS
ignored them without a word of
explanation.
Thus, we should not be asked to
finance the station's attacks (I use the
plural since WTVS has done it
repeatedly) on Israel and the Jewish
people.

Accolades
My father, Daniel Berman, was men-
tioned in a recent article featuring thc
Senior Adult Workshop at JVS
("Helping Hands" Aug. 15). As stat-
ed, he is an 84-year-old retired busi-
ness owner who enjoys participating
in the workshop. I would like to share
the rest of his story.
My father has dementia. His life
changed dramatically in the last two
years. He has lost his independence,
<
driving privileges, everything that
made him feel his value as a man.
The only positive during this time
has been Jewish Vocational Service. I
cannot say enough about the kindness
and extra attention shown to my
father and me by Fran Cook and the
rest of the staff.
Daniel Berman still has a job to go
to. He is a productive person who
cashes a check with his name on it -
(even though it is a small amount).
There is still dignity for a very proud
man in a stage of life that is cruel and
heartbreaking.
