overemphasizing beauty and body
shape, particularly for girls?
• Learn about and discuss with
your children the dangers of dieting,
the value of moderate exercising for
fitness, and the importance of eating a
variety of foods.

sentiments of the season!

• Be a good role model in regard to
sensible eating and exercising for the
joy of it.
• Don't avoid activities that may
call attention to your weight, such as
swimming and dancing. Also, refuse
to wear clothes that are uncomfortable
and unattractive just because they
divert attention from your weight or
shape.
• Practice taking women seriously
for what they say, feel and do, not for
how slender they are.
• Help your children appreciate and
resist the ways in which television,
magazines and other media distort the
true diversity of body types, implying
that a slender body means power,
excitement and sexuality.
• Educate boys about the various
forms of discrimination against
women, including weight discrimina-
tion.
• Encourage your children to be
active and to enjoy what their bodies
can do.
• Do whatever you can to promote
the self-esteem and self-respect of your
daughters in intellectual, athletic and
social endeavors. ❑
