Three times a week, Cheryl Grand of Bloomfield Hills and Adrienne Ruby of West Bloomfield pay Jeff Plummer of the Sports Club in West Bloomfield $38 a session to put them through a tough workout with free weights and circuits on the weight machines. "Having an appointment to work out with Jeff and Adrienne keeps me working out regularly," says Cheryl. "Before I started working out with a trainer, I would work out for a month, then I would stop. And I wouldn't push myself. "Knowing he is there waiting for us gets us there." Laurie Weinberger of Birmingham had never been into jogging, aerobics, or any other fitness routine before hooking up with Rena Lewis, a personal trainer in Birm- ingham who trains people in the exercise room in her house. "I found out about Rena through a friend five years ago, and I asked if I could join her," says Lau- rie. "I didn't even know about personal trainers. Now I train with Rena and a friend twice a week for an hour with weights." She also does regular car- dio workouts on her own. Cheryl Schanes of West Bloomfield began working out with a friend. For the last year, she has been put through a weight routine with Dan Jackson at Exclu- sive Fitness in Farmington Hills. "I felt like it was time to get into some kind of exercise routine," she says. "For me, it's value received because it gets me there." How do you find a good personal trainer? "Word-of- mouth is the ultimate referral," says Dany Faar, director of sports medicine and fitness at Franklin Fitness and Racquet Club. "Most of our clients are referred from friends, doctors or physical therapists." A personal trainer is like a personal coach, and the choice is individualis- tic. "My recommendation is you go through a comprehensive evaluation first, so we can develop an optimal program for you," says Faar. Faar and his staff talk to the client about priori- ties, guidelines, dos and don'ts, which exercises you like and which make you cringe, nutrition and lifestyle modifi- cations to help determine what kind of a program and which trainer best suits you. Both Franklin and Beverly Hills are among many health clubs that look for experienced, certified personal trainers. Both Faar and Bloomquist look for people either with certifica- tions from the American Council of Exercise (ACE) or the American Fit- ness Aerobics Association,- and/or someone with a four-year college degree in some exercise-related, nutri- tion or fitness program. Both expect their trainers to attend seminars and training sessions to stay up-to-date. When assessing a personal trainer, take a look at how fit they are, how focused they are, and how knowl- edgeable they are on how to work with weights and machines, on how muscles work, on how to adapt after having injuries, and how well they can set up a program that keeps you com- ing back.
