her, 16-year-old Yanni and 13-year-old
Alexandros.
Whatever Alexandra didn't learn
about restaurants from George was
taught her by Bobby, with whom she
worked when it all was Bobby's Coun-
try House.
Together, they were a fine team ...
and the success of AlexSandra's Opa is
a lasting memorial to him.
If you can read between the lines,
you'll know that this is a prime reason
why Alex won't be satisfied until she
has the best ... because that's what she
always called Bobby.
SEATING IS ONLY for about 62
people, so a short wait at lunchtime
may be necessary.
But many customers are finding
Beans & Cornbread soulful bistro in
Sunset Strip, Northwestern Highway
between 12 Mile and Inkster, another
of the few casual dining spots where
the wait is worth the results.
This is a very interesting place that
owner Patrick Coleman has opened ...
Where dining is fun as jazz music,
with a lot of bouncy rhythm coming
from wall speakers, has folks tapping
their feet as they chew.
Beans & Cornbread makes its own
wonderful breads that come in baskets
as you want them ... Hot corn bread
and hot sweet potato muffins that
have you asking for more.
There are pictures of jazz greats and
athletes all about the restaurant walls,
and waitpersons who seem intent on
ultimate satisfaction.
Like the waitress we had, Sabra
Gebrai, working days and evenings,
with the great smile, wonderful per-
sonality and very cordial efficiency.
Even the desserts and pastries are
made by Patrick's folks in the kitchen,
which is so very clean, as is the dining
area ... Predecessor at this site was Mr.
Kabob.
The portobello mushroom and veg-
etable sandwich I had at lunch time is
a big winner ... Also the vegetable
potato leek soup ... Another in our
party had the Cajun chicken sandwich
and another the Harlem burrito (col-
lard greens, diced tomatoes, black-
eyed peas and rice, rolled in a grilled
flour tortilla) ... Others around the
room had broiled whitefish, roasted
chicken pot pie, meat loaf, chicken
wings, salmon croquettes, soul Caesar
salad with romaine lettuce and topped
with cornmeal dusted croutons; Cae-
sar with grilled chicken or salmon,
and other mouth-watering dishes
served at lunch time.
The dinner menu also has potato
