radio/CD player that tucks under-
neath the kitchen cabinet for easy
access without cluttering up precious
counter space. It's priced at $169.95.
The Teledyne Water Pik Flexible
Shower Massage shower head has a
snakelike tubular arm that allows it to
be easily adjusted to the ideal height
for the shortest and tallest people in
the household. It also has six different
spray settings from spray to turbo
pulse — a small gift of daily delight
indeed — and is a bargain for under
$50. And if your parents enjoy watch-
ing birds at the backyard feeder, or
during walks on the beach or in the
woods, they might like a good pair of
binoculars.
Those who like to dine out will
enjoy The Chef's Guide to America's
Best Restaurants, compiled and edited
by Chef Charles Dale of Aspen's
award-winning Renaissance
Restaurant, which tells where
America's best chefs dine on their own
nights off. Jacques Pepin, host of the
PBS-TV series "Cooking with
Claudine" (Claudine is his daughter)
recommends the book, saying, "If
you want to know where to find good
food at reasonable prices, ask the chefs
who cook in America's restaurants.
You can count on them to tell it like it
is." Call (970) 920-1901 to order the
guide.
Of course, chocolate is the tradi-
tional favorite gift for the ladies; but
here's a new twist. Scharffen Berger
chocolate is the first American choco-
late since World War II to be made in
the classic European tradition. This
fine pure bittersweet chocolate is man-
ufactured by Dr. Robert Steinberg, a
Harvard grad physician, who did an
apprenticeship at Berhanchon, the
renowned French manufacturer in
Lyons. He makes it in small batches in
San Francisco using only whole bean
vanilla and large crystal sugar, vintage
equipment and methods developed
nearly a century ago to ensure consis-
tency in taste and texture. For the gift
box of a 1.5 kg. bar of pure dark
chocolate call (415) 866-3300.
Flowers are another traditional gift,
but here's another new twist. Find the
kind of large, flat basket with a handle
that is traditionally used to bring in
flowers from a cutting garden.
