If all else fails and my husband and I
cannot come up with anything original
to give her, we get her yet another frog.
7. Take a walk on their wild side.
Every year the Detroit Zoo offers more
than 100 of its animals for adoption.
No, you don't get to have the elephant
come to the soiree. Instead, the zoo will
send a certificate of adoption and a
photograph of the animal as well as
two zoo newsletters. The price to
become a Wildlife Preserver ranges
from $25 to $1,000. Major donors
(those of $1,000) have their name
engraved on the Renaissance Circle, a
large monument in the middle of the
zoo.

During the holidays, the zoo offers a
special package for adopters. For $35,
the buyer has the chance to adopt the
polar bear, the Siberian tiger, the red
panda, the green and black dart poison
frog and the hummingbird, receive a
color photograph of the animal, a bean
bag or plush zoo replica and an adop-
tion certificate to commemorate the
blessed event.
But don't stop there. The zoo invites
all who would like to celebrate their
birthdays or other events to rent its
facilities after hours.
8. Team up. Gather a group of
friends and sponsor a team for a walk-
a-thon or similar benefit for the per-
son's favorite charity. Gilda's Club, the

Alzheimer's Association and a number
of other charities sponsor such fund
raisers each year and welcome teams.
Host a small party before or after the
event to personalize the occasion.
Or call a moratorium on gifts alto-
gether and host a party to benefit a
favorite cause. Miriam Imerman of
Forgotten Harvest, a local agency that
supplies perishable foods to area soup
kitchens, said the charity relies on such
benefits to raise funds or restock
shelves.
9. Give life. Around this time of the
year, blood banks always need a little
extra help. Gather a list of friends and
host a Chanukah blood drive in your
friend's honor.
Afterward, make sure there is a des-
ignated driver and go out for a drink;
with a diminished amount of blood, it
shouldn't take nearly as much alcohol
to feel the spirit of the season.

10. Give light. In lieu of presents,
donate the amount you might spend to
The Heat And Warmth (THAW) fund,
a local resource for the less fortunate
who cannot afford to pay their utility
bills during the cold months.
Distributed through the Salvation
Army and other area charities, dona-
tion forms for THAW can be found in
monthly gas and electricity bills.
Chanukah is the festival of lights
and the warmth friends and families
bring might help others have a warm
and light-filled season.
11. Do something wacky. For
Chanukah, fill their lawn with giant,
gaudy electric candles. For a birthday,
fill their lawn with flamingos or fake
cemetery headstones or decorate their
car with signs proclaiming the year of
their birth. A picture may be worth
1,000 words but a smile is worth more.

ley faces.
12. Do something fun. After the
latkes have been devoured and the
money has been given away, gather the
gang and have an evening full of fun.
Pile into cars and hunt down the
gaudiest holiday light displays. Then go
ice skating or sledding at a local park.
Pack thermos' full of steaming hot
chocolate or stop at a coffee shop after-
ward. ❑
