As section editor of this year's gift
guides, I've been thinking about
Chanukah since Simchat Torah. Since
we don't light the first candle of
Chanukah until Tuesday, Dec. 23, I've
had more time than usual to plan
exciting stories for our four gift sec-
tions. And, you, our readers, have
more opportunity to plan your own
celebration of the holiday.
In our first gift guide,
there is a secret I am sharing
with you. Yes, there are low-
fat latkes. Food expert
Annabel Cohen has tested
some of the recipes provided
exclusively for The Jewish
News. In addition to fewer
calories, you can also Press
without the mess. "You still
get. the Chanukah flavor
without the Chanukah
mess," Annabel says. The oil
that usually splatters over an
entire kitchen and infiltrates
every nook and cranny in the
house is absent. As for the
taste, "They are delicious," she
exclaims. Unfortunately, Annabel
could not find any recipes for low-fat
chocolate Chanukah gelt. Maybe, next
year.
Please note our story "The Gift of
You." Writer Jill Davidson Sklar pro-

vides us with a detailed list of how to
volunteer in the community during
Chanukah. Of course, many people in
our community give of themselves all
year long. Sklar also wrote the article
"What to Give, What to Give?" She
offers some suggestions on what to give
the person who has everything. Look
for her unique and clever gift ideas.
If high-tech gadgets are on your
list, Ruthan Brodsky contacted many

to keep us up-to-
date. I'll give you a
hint — think digi-
tal.
For the littlest
ones, read about
the latest toys at
local stores. Megan
Swoyer talked to
store owners at the
malls as well as at
local boutiques
about the newest
playthings.
What would
, Chanukah be with-
out menorot? We highlight some that
are works of art and can be displayed
all year long in our feature
"Magnificent Menorot."
From tzedakah to gift ideas and
