t a farewell party in
Jerusalem for Dore Gold,
on the eve of his coming
to New York as Israel's
ambassador to the United Nations,
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
pointed to a microphone and
advised his colleague, "that's your
weapon, use it."
Netanyahu, of course, advanced
his
personal political career by taking

his own advice while serving as UN
ambassador in the mid-1980s,
becoming a master of the media in
making Israel's case on the national
and international scene.
Gold has a different style. A
native of Hartford, Conn., he is an
academic who became a close confi-
dante of Netanyahu through his
expertise in foreign policy, and in
recent months has displayed a low-
key, cerebral approach in academic
settings and in behind-the-scenes
consultations. But during an inter-
view in his office, the kippah-wear-
ing diplomat demonstrated his
intention to follow his mentor's
counsel.

"The U.N. is a platform for stat-
ing your case," he says, "and that's
what I- hope to do." It won't be easy,
given the long-standing animosity
toward Israel at the world body,
most recently in evidence during a
special emergency session condemn-
ing Israel's construction at Har
Homa.
