LONNY GOLDSMITH Staff Writer he Jewish Community Center is the only Jewish organization selected to receive a grant from the UPS (United Parcel Service) Olympic Sports Legacy Program, which was founded to provide sports equipment for disadvantaged children in 11 cities in the U.S. "Detroit was chosen because it is a large metropolitan area," said Stuart Wachs, director of recreational ser- vices. We are hosting the Maccabi Games next year, so it could bring good visibility." The Jimmy Prentis Morris JCC in Oak Park likely will receive the bulk of the sports equipment donated. "The JPM deals with an under- served population, with many new Americans there," Wachs said. UPS's program was begun in part- nership with the United States 4Plympic Committee [USOC], an outreach program that uses Olympians as role models for children. The program was launched at the USOC media summit in Salt Lake City on Oct. 28. Wachs recently submitted a "wish list" to the USOC with over 300 needed items ranging from basketballs to pre-school gym equipment. The final determination of what nd how much is received will be made within the next two weeks, but he expects it will total $5,000 to $10,000. The equipment will be received between Jan. 5-16, in a ceremony that is yet to be planned. According to Keith Ferguson of the USOC, Olympians are going to be brought in top resent the goods to the children Fundthe JCC. "This really helps us, because it's equipment we were going to need eventually, if not immediately," Wachs said. "The Center is in transition right now, and we are focused and recom- mitted to youth sports. This will enable us to improve on the quality of what we can give." ❑ • II ■ 11110111 ■ :siw.7,7klamazaEF:37'4,17AMTATM32:111,v, wsnim‘.
