hanks to Belva Plain's
weather-delayed flight, . the
Jewish Book Fair was drawn
out an extra day, until
Monday, Nov. 17.
The people came out for that extra
day, but it wasn't needed to make it one
of the most successful of the 45 fairs
that preceded it. The estimated atten-
dance for the week was 15,000 people
at both Jewish Community Centers.
The largest crowds of the week
came for local sports columnist Mitch
Albom.
Albom, a nationally-recognized
writer from the Detroit Free Press and
host of two syndicated radio shows on
WJR, spoke about his bestselling
book, Tuesdays With Morrie, to a full
crowd at Shiffman Hall in the
Maple/Drake JCC.
"I was stunned by the turnout," he
said following the talk. "I had expect-
ed a few dozen people to come and
we'd discuss the book."
The turnout also stunned organiz-
ers of the event.

"It was very strange," said Carrie
Kushner, the event's volunteer co-
chair. "It was such a big crowd for
noon on a Wednesday."
According to Kushner's partner,
Andi Wolfe, there were no real disap-
pointments.
"We got the type of crowds for
speakers we usually get," she said. "It
was different from last year because we
didn't have the celebrities. We had
more than 50 people here for every
speaker."
Tuesdays With Morrie, Kushner said,
was one of three or four books that
sold out, and had to be special-
ordered.
Thursday also was a big day at the
Maple/Drake JCC, with Larry Gilbert
and Pete Hamill giving back-to-back
talks.
At the Jimmy Prentis Morris JCC,
$2,000 more was made this year than
last, and there were over 1,000 peo-
ple that came just to hear the speak-
ers.
"We had four children's programs
this year that had a lot more to offer
then last year," said Leslee Magidson,
who ran the book fair at the JPM.
