as late as the '60s, producers still did-

n't think it necessary to list everyone
from the caterer to the bankers who
put together the financing.
My favorite new credit appeared in
the recent film Dr. Jekyll and Ms.
Hyde, now on cable, in which the
main character changes sex as well as
disposition under the influence of his
drug. According to the credits, this
required a "sex coordinator."
On most movies, titles were pretty
utilitarian. You might have a hand
turning pages of a book or the credits
written on sand to be blown by the
desert wind. Usually, though, the stu-
dios adopted a straightforward
approach.

In the late '30s, MGM had a stan-
dard house style with a bas relief of
Leo the Lion in the background; you
can still see this in The Wizard of Oz.
Selznick movies typically used credits
that scrolled up the screen. Fans of
calligraphy still appreciate the fine
hand lettering used on 20th Century
Fox films of the late '40s and '50s.
According to movie-industry
observers, the theater chains are once
again looking at makihg movie going
an experience; they are moving away
from the severely utilitarian boxes
that have so long been hallmarks of
the multiplex. Showmanship is com-
ing back in — and none too soon.
Still, nothing today can possibly
recapture the excitement and
romance of going to the movies in
the days of the neighborhood palace
— even if people did step on your
feet as they came in the middle of the
picture. El
