Maple Road West Bloomfield, MI TRE OFF BROADWAY 'THEA IELD LOOMF IN WEST B The next rung down were the neighborhood houses ("the nabes," Variety called them), which might well lay within walking distance of your home. Some survive today as specialty houses. The higher the theater on this chain, the more curtains it would have. Older houses would follow theatrical tradition with a flat drop curtain deco- rated with an elaborate image. That would rise to reveal more sumptuous yard goods, which might rise in impressive swags to show yet another set of curtains, behind which lay the screen. The last curtain would close after every item on the program; when the grand drape again descended, it was time for intermission. Just as curtains would not open until after the movie began, so they would close before the movie was fin- ished. "The End" would ripple as the moving drapes caught the projected image, thus making sure the audience was spared the horrid sight of a blank screen. Indeed, except for a cast list, there were no end credits to speak of, and some studios didn't bother to tell you who played what. Credits always came at the begin- ning of the film and, as you can see from old movies on cable, those cred- its were still minimal in the early '30s. They have gradually been getting longer and longer ever since, but as MOVIE GOING on page 108
