CONTEST WORKS

Help us write the opening paragraph of a
romance novel and win first, second- or
third-place romantic prizes. THE
JUDGES: Four local romance writers,
including Jan Greenberg, aka Jill
Gregory and Jillian Karr; Karen A. Katz,
aka Jillian Karr; Ruth Ryan Langan; and
Marianne Willman. The judges are look-
ing for clean, strong prose that would
compel readers to want to know more
about the characters and keep reading.
Think love and romance. THE RULES:
Begin with these opening sentences: "It
had been ten years since she'd gotten a
Valentine from anyone. But the moment
she saw the bright red envelope taped to
her door, she knew -who it Was from."
Write 60-75 words to complete the para-
graph. Dialogue is acceptable, though
not required. THE PRIZES: First-place
prize is a pair of 14kt. gold diamond and
amber earrings valued at $200 from
Tapper's Fine Diamonds and Jewelry in
West Bloomfield. Second-place prize is a
$50 gift certificate to Sweet Lorrainc's
Restaurant in Southfield. Third-place
prize is also a $50 gift certificate to Sweet
Lorraine's. Plus, the winning entries will
