the importance of working for what
they want, Baldwin stresses.
It's not what the child has, per se,
that's a problem, but the way the child
gets what he or she has," he says. "If a
child wants a stereo and mows lawns or
baby-sits to help pay for it, that child
has an experience that promotes matu-
rity and responsibility and accountabil-
ity. But if that child wants a stereo and
guilt-trips his parents or whines and
nags until they give in, he gets the
experience that this is the way needs
are met."
With the holidays coming up, and
birthdays coming every year, parents
face a challenge.
"Kids who open up 20 or 25 gifts
can't appreciate what they have; and if
they can't appreciate it, what's the
point," says Gosman.
If treats are kept for special occa-
sions, and limited even on those occa-
sions, each present will seem more
exciting and kids may lose their sense
of entitlement.
Parents should trust their instinct as
to when enough becomes too much,
Bodnar says.
Fortunately, the holidays are also
the ideal time to teach an essential les-
son: Life is not just about taking.
Children need to see their parents
contribute time and money to charita-
ble activities, Bodnar believes, and
should be encouraged to take an active
role themselves.
"Find an organization they can
relate to, such as a shelter for kids,
where they can see their toys and cloth-
ing being used by someone else," she
suggests.
Cornucopia kids with too many
toys might be required to give to chari-
ty for every new toy received, Gosman
adds.,
Farmington Hills psychologist Blau
recommends teaching children the true
art of giving, which includes the offer-
ing of one's self. The celebration of
Chanukah can consist of such offerings
from parent to child, child to parent,
sibling to sibling as well as an offering
of service to those in the community,
she says.
"Parents can set a Chanukah ritual
of being of service to others — a time
spent with an elder relative, helping a
young mother with her children, visit-
ing a nursing home," she says. "The
lessons learned will be life lessons." II
