T

he AppleTree recently invited
young artists to bravely step
forward and test popular
crayons on the market.
Was our office flooded with calls!
Just a few hours after the paper was
printed and out on the street our list
of volunteers was complete. Thanks
to all of you who called, and for
those who we weren't able to
include this time: please be on the
lookout for future readers' surveys in
The AppleTree.
–Meanwhile, check out the results
of our crayon testing, which fea-
tured products from Prang, Crayola,
Roseart and Funcraft. While there
was little difference in price among
all the brands, there is a great dif-
ference when it comes to quality.
Children were asked to rate
crayons using the following scale:
)

Excellent! These are out of this
world!
,4 r Pretty good
3 - Average
2 - Do I have to color with these?
1 - Put them in the trash!

Funcraft

Ratings ranged from 1 to 4
Average rating: 2.2
Comments:
"These did not hold up well at all.
They kept breaking and snapping
while I was using them. Also, the
-olors were waxy and weak, and
when I held the crayon it was so
thin it felt like it was going to break
in 2 seconds."
— Shoshana Ungar

"The points kept falling off."
— Allison Shapiro

The wax would not stay on the
paper. I had to push it on the paper
with my finger. The colors were
weak, and the crayons broke in 2
seconds."
— Elana Lebovic

Crayola

Ratings ranged from 4 to 5
Average rating: 4.6

Comments:
"These crayons are magnifi-
cent!
The colors were bright and
strong."
— Shoshana Ungar
