This is no one-shot deal. This will
be Franklin's 19th year hosting a
national indoor championship tourna-
ment.
There are 22 tennis pros on
Franklin's staff, which numbers more
than 300 employees. But as Brode will
be the first to tell you, there's much
more to Franklin than just tennis.
"We're like a permanently-docked
I
cruise ship, and the environment is
very important. I want to create an
environment that's like a three-ring
circus. I think when people come in
they should be stimulated, there
should be a lot of activity going on
that creates the right atmosphere in
which people can come together.
"I :think that today we're becoming
I further and further removed, imper-
sonal — with e-mail and computers
— and just the way the world is
going. This is one of the places where
you can come in and interact, and be
social, and that's a major factor. I'm
trying to create an exciting kind of
environment where people can social-
ize," said Brode.
Franklin began as an eight-court
OP tennis facility. A major expansion in
1974/75 added 12 more tennis courts
and a restaurant, now known as
Sneakers.
"Over the years, as the business
changed, we constantly changed with
the demand. We tried to stay innova-
tive and ahead of things, So we recent-
ly put in a country club-like outdoor
aquatic center with a big swimming
I pool and a restaurant and clubhouse
where our eight outdoor courts were.
And this year, because we're becoming
a family club now, we built a kiddie
pool," said Brode.
Brode is particularly proud of the
club's in-house sports medicine divi-
sion. It features an on-site rehab cen-
ter operated by Sinai DMC.
Franklin offers adult and junior
basketball leagues, and soccer clinics.
"What I am trying to do is bring in
top people and make-this club the cut-
ting edge of what's going on in the
industry," said Brode.
Typical of that approach was
Brode's decision to develop Kidsports
for children 6 to 12 who were too
grown-up to go into the nursery while
their parents worked out. Franklin has

more than 700 youngsters that fit into
this category. To accommodate them,
KidSports features diversions ranging
from air hockey to computers for
video games. Between the nursery and
Kidsports, Franklin offers activities for
infants through teenagers.
