A

visit to Buenos Aires,
Argentina, was mixed with
anticipation and excitement.
I had heard so much about
the Jewish community, I was curious
to find out first-hand about life in a
country often renowned for being less
than friendly to Jews.
One of my first stops, the Jewish
Musuem of Buenos Aires - the Dr.
Salavador Kibrick Collection, is also
housed in the same building complex
as the Congregacion Israelita de la
Republica Argentina — the largest
synagogue in Argentina.
In the musuem there are 400
objects on display including ancient
registration books from the 1800s
containing the names of people from
Eastern Europe; large old paper maps
of the colonies; duplicates of syna-
gogue windows from Toledo, Spain,
depicting David's psalms; and engrav-
ings of a seder by Bernard Piccard

from the 1700s. Some of the Judaica
pieces are hand-embroidered on velvet
Torah curtains from the first Temple
in Buenos Aires, ritual instruments, a
silver etrog box, a 16th century Torah
from Morocco, another from Iraq,
candlesticks and buckles detailed with
kabalastic writing and menorot. There
are also medals from the collection of
Baron Von Hirsh and various coins.
As a side note to art treasures, in
the huge, gilded cathedral in Buenos
Aires is a memorial to the Holocaust.
It consists of a large framed "picture"
containing 13 pieces of Hebrew texts
which had been rescued from
European Jewish communities. Its
impact, unfortunately, is almost lost in
the badly lit corner of a chapel; also, it
is hung so high, it is difficult to read.
We then moved on to view the syn-
agogue. It came as no surprise that
security at the Sinagoga de la
Congregacion Israelita de la Republica
Argentina was impenetrable. After
