RLD PREMIERE Let Shirley the Shiva Queen handle your Shiva. A rollicking, outrageous comedy. You'll laugh through your tears. Thy 4 ueen Fiennes Tuning va "Schindler's List" star set to play three generations in a new film. of TOM TUGEND Special to The Jewish News B ritish actor Ralph Fiennes, who convincingly played the sadistic SS camp com- mandant Amon Goeth in Schindler's List has been cast to play the parts of three Jews in an ambi- tious project announced earlier this month. The film, as yet untitled, will be the multigenerational saga of a Jewish family that rises from humble begin- nings to positions of wealth and power within the crumbling Austro- Hungarian Empire. In a demanding challenge, even for an actor nominated twice for Academy Awards in a relatively short screen career (Schindler's List and the title role in The English Patient), Fiennes will portray three genera- tions of men in the Sonnenschein , family. The patriarch, Ignatz, becomes a prominent judge, torn when his gov- ernment embarks on anti-Jewish per- secutions. His son, Adam, converts to Christianity to advance his career as champion fencer and Olympic hero, but is caught up in the Holocaust. Finally, Ivan, Adam's son, after sur- viving war, revolution, loss and betrayal, realizes that the ultimate allegiance must be to himself and his heritage. Hungarian director Istvan Szabo, who says he has been preparing for this project for the last five years, won an Oscar for Mephisto as Best Foreign Film, and critical acclaim for Colonel Redl, Confidence and Hanussen. He will direct the upcoming film, based on an original screenplay by himself and American playwright Israel Horovitz. Alliance Communication Corp. announced that it will produce the Szabo-Fiennes film, with principal photography set to start next summer in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin and Paris. ❑ Tom Tugend is a Los Angeles-based freelance writer.
