ed feelings.
It finally pivots on a big conference,
brisk decisions, suave but not rumpled
Ernst realizing his doctor's calling lies
somewhere between Dr. Kildare and
Albert Schweitzer, and Connie cyni-
cally dumping religion to reveal her
soul motive: envy of Felicia's physique.
Even in our age of superficiality, the
living, dying and litigation are not this
simple. Rated R.

This movie was clearly made for
nobody who saw The Day of the
Jackal. Because anyone who recalls the
old (1973) thriller will be sickened by
the remake. The Day of the Jackal was
(and is) a marvel of clean craft by
director Fred Zinnemann, whose film
was blueprint-true to Frederick
Forsythe's book about a secret plot to
kill Charles De Gaulle.
In the new film from Michael
Caton-Jones (who did much better
with Rob Roy), using the rather pathet-
ic script by Chuck Pfarrer, Bruce

Willis plays The Jackal as a boutique
of changing hair styles. He is also a
nasty psychotic who torments victims
before killing them.
Michel Lonsdale was fine and sub-
tle in Zinnemann's movie, as the pur-
suing French detective. Sidney Poitier,
as the FBI ace chasing Willis, can also
be very fine, but he no longer has the
star weight to be chief protagonist. So
the film employs Richard Gere as
Declan, an IRA agent held in a U.S.
prison, then set loose on a short chain
because he's the only person who
knows what TheJackal looks like. The
hecticplot is all jumps and jerks.
