American curfews. "They don't have
any curfews and they go to parties
from midnight to 5 a.m.," said Cass
Tech senior Andrea Mitchell, who
hosted Suissa. "Our parties end at
midnight!"
Accustomed to the quiet streets of
Tel Aviv's suburbs, several teens
reported feeling nervous in Detroit.
"In Tel Aviv, you can walk safely.
Here you have to lock the car doors,"
said Teram.
But Isachar sees Detroit's risks as
no worse than Israel's risks — just
different. "Here, when we're walking
down the street, I'm kind of scared. I
was shocked to see bullet-proof glass
in stores. But in Israel, we have our
own problems. One girl told me it's
really the same thing: You're afraid of
bombs, and we're afraid of guns."

"Teens are teens
no matter where
),
they're from.

With years of army service and
university ahead of them, the Israeli
teens are a long way from finalizing
career goals. But Isachar says the trip
has given her a lot of new ideas.
"I might want to learn more about
African-American history and philos-
ophy," she said. "The trip opened
many doors and opened my mind
and I'm grateful."
And their visit has also left a mark
on their hosts. "It's been a fun experi-
ence," said Cass Tech senior Zachary
Williams who hosted Yoav Srebrnik.
"We've been talking a lot."
"It's been very interesting, and I've
learned more about Israel," said
Ja'Near Grayson, who — with daugh-
ter Katrice — hosted Ortal Yitzhaki.
"Teens are teens no matter where
they're from."
