The Purple Gang has been exposed with their names (save two by request of a prominent Jewish philanthropist), 70 years after their demise. Our corn- mittee would not harm the integrity of the exhibit by selecting photos that would not receive captions. We fairly represented that there were "bad Jews" among us during the Prohibition era, and we took care to give a history of the gang from their juvenile delin- quent school days to the gang's demise. It is within our first amendment right, and we were proud that our sponsor, The Detroit Jewish News, agreed. Whether we were first-rate, sec- ond-rate or third-rate historians is an opinion that Mr. Bolkosky may express, but it was the committee as a whole that made these decisions, not Stephen Rosman. The committee recognizes the con- tribution Mr. Bolkosky made to pre- serving Detroit Jewish history in his book. It was used as a source to assist us with captions. Perhaps in future programs of historical relevance, Mr. Bolkosky will want to volunteer nine months of his time to assist the com- mittee. It would be welcomed. Despite all the controversy, we thank our financial sponsors and we thank all of you for visiting the "old neighborhood" once again and for sharing your stories with the Jewish community. Marilyn R. Oct. 31) about the exhibit on the '20s and '30s. Unfortunately, I made a rather serious error. The Hayim Greenberg Shule was not a communist school, but rather the Farband Shule, a labor Zionist organization. The communist school was the Hersh Lekkert Shule, and the two schools were ideologically opposed to each other. VIA-0 Educational Priorities We congratulate Julie Wiener on her Oct. 31 story ("The Learning Gap"), describing the sad conditions of adult Jewish education in Detroit. Despite claims to the contrary (see Linda Giles' letter, "Adult Education Facts Missing," Nov. 7), the article adhered closely to the truth, as we and many others have observed. The plain truth is that the Midrasha has been dismantled as a provider of adult Jewish education. Texts for a Talmud class. In addition, putting the Midrasha library at the bottom of the AJE's pri- ority list by cutting out funding for a professional libraria, was a disastrous decision. This is hastening the death of what once was the Jewish commu- nity's prime source for Jewish books. The AJE's priorities in recent years indicate a greater interest in the "bot- tom line" than in furthering Jewish education.
