be removed. The Airofit proved to be
more durable, if less user friendly.
Previous research commissioned by
the American Council on Exercise at
Cal State Northridge examined abdom-
inal toners and aerobic riders. The ton-
ers were found to be no more effective
than conventional crunches in address-
ing the abs, while the riders - including
the HealthRider and Cardioglide - were
found to be much less challenging than
the traditional treadmill.

ietary do-gooders who keep
insisting we eat more fruits
and vegetables to reduce
the risk of cancer are now
asking us to wash them down with
plenty of water.
A recent study showed that women
who drank more than five glasses of
plain water a day were half as likely to
develop colon cancer as those who con-
sumed fewer than two glasses per day.
Results were less convincing with
men, investigators said.
The research, conducted at the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle,
examined diet questionnaires complet-
ed by more than 800 middle-aged men
and women. Half had a history of
colon cancer; the other half had been
cancer- free.
Increased water intake could expe-
dite the transport of food through the -
intestines, reducing contact with poten-
tial carcinogens in the colon, investiga-
tors speculated.
General recommendations for adults
are at least eight 8-ounce glasses of
water per day - or the equivalent in
such fluids as citrus juices and soups.
Meanwhile, fresh fruit gets a solid
endorsement in the Sept. 28, 1996,
edition of the British Medical Journal.
A 17-year study in England,
Scotland and Wales showed that those
who ate fresh fruit daily had a big
health advantage over those who didn't
make it a regular habit.
The frequent-fruit consumers had
32 percent less chance of suffering a
fatal stroke and 24 percent less chance
of dying of a heart attack
Similar results were reported in the
September issue of (beginital) Cancer
Epidemiology, Biomarkers- &
Prevention: (endital) Men who ate
fresh fruit every day had a 70 percent
less chance of dying from cancer of the
digestive tract than those who ate
almost no fruit. El
