Back
In The Fray

Former ADL director
will fill in as interim
head of Michigan
ACLU.

t this rate, Dick Lobenthal
may never retire.
In 1996, he stepped
down after 32 years of ser-
vice as director of the Michigan Anti-
Defamation League.
But after less than a year, he was
back in the fray, working as a private
consultant on cultural diversity issues.
Now he's filling in at the American
Civil Liberties Union of Michigan,
serving as interim director until a
replacement is
found for Howard 0
Simon, who trans-
ferred to the
Florida ACLU in
October.
A longtime
ACLU board
member,
Lobenthal is inti-
mately familiar
with the issues on
the organization's
Dick Lobenthal:
plate.
Filling the void.
"The ACLU is
an organization that I have great
respect for, and its causes are ones that
I'm comfortable with," said
Lobenthal. "It's hard to imagine a bet-
ter fit. A lot of the people involved are
people I've known for years and
years."
According to Micki Levin, a board
member who is heading the executive
director search committee, the ACLU
is using a Boston-based firm to con-
duct a national search and does not
anticipate finding a permanent direc-
tor until February.
"With that long a period of time,
we knew we needed an interim per-
son," she said. "Lucky for us, Dick
was available."
Lobenthal stresses this is a tempo-
rary situation. "I'm anxious that they
find a new director," he said. "In the
meantime, it's an important organiza-
tion and I'm honored at least tem-
porarily to be associated with it." El
