over the site to inhibit soft tissue
(gum) growth and encourage new
bone growth in the affected area.
"Sometimes I need to recommend
a second augmentation, depending
upon the amount of jaw shrinkage.
This usually takes place 6-8 months
after the first augmentation."

DDS, who started the clinical
implant program at the University of
Detroit-Mercy Dental School, recent
technological advances have
improved the long-term success of
implantation and integration into the

tive and functionally superior to stan-
dard removable dentures. And age
isn't a factor; I've put in implants on
patients in their early 20s, like Lisa
and Brad, and have success with
patients in their 80s, like Max Sosin.
"Health is the key factor. A patient
needs to be in good general health so
that healing takes place. Moreover,
implantation requires a commitment
in time and money. Implants can cost
over $2,000 each and multiply that
by the number of implants plus bone
augmentation and restored dentures
and costs can easily reach $25,000
and more over a 2-3 year period.
There has been some insurance cover-
age over the last two years but it's
very limited.
