first half, scoring just five points on free
-throws. But in the second half she hit
three 3-point shots and totaled 14
points. The Barons rallied from a 10-
point deficit to a 55-54 victory.
"In the first half, she was frustrated,"
says Boyle. "But she was also wearing
people down and she took advantage of

In addition to her on-court leader-
ship, Silver, a co-captain, is also a key
leader off the court. .
"She really has taken a leadership
role," Boyle says. "She really has taken
some of the younger kids under her
wing."
Silver has become good friends with
sophomore point guard Michelle
Bireta, a rarity between a sophomore
and a senior. "Carrie really pushes her,"
Boyle said. "I was going to take Biretta
out in the third quarter of a game and
put Carrie in for her. Carrie said, 'No,
no, no, that's not going to help
Michelle's confidence.' So Carrie sat
back down, which shows a lot."
Silver enjoys her role as a mentor to

the younger players, especially Bireta.
"I see so much potential and the
only thing that's holding her back is the
confidence level. So, as much as I can, I
help her out because ... coming up
from the junior varsity is a huge transi-
tion."
After four years of basketball success,
Silver also faces a transition. She'll
probably play AAU basketball after the
high school season ends this month.
But that might spell the end of her
organized basketball career.
"I want to play softball in college,"
she says, meaning that she likely won't
be able to play college basketball, unless
she attends a smaller, Division III
school.
She's been accepted at the University
of Michigan, but may still apply to
other schools. If she attends U-M, she'll
try to walk on as a softball player.
It's always an uphill struggle for a
non-scholarship player to make a
Michigan team. But when it comes to
facing tough challenges, Silver knows
how to come up big. El
