love triangle to play itself out.
While much in the film merits seri-
ous Oscar consideration, Helena
Bonham Carter and Linus Roache
undoubtedly deserve nominations for
their compelling lead performances.
Bonham Carter is transformed from
her typical role as a sheltered young
woman, in such films as A Room with
a View, into a shrewd and believable
manipulator.
The expressiveness of her face, as
she runs the gamut of emotions from
indifference to jealousy, often renders
dialogue superfluous. And it goes
without saying that Bonham Carter
was born to play aristocratic characters
• of the past; her face almost seems
anachronistic in the modern world.
Roache, who was robbed of an
Oscar nomination for his terrific lead
performance in Priest, is similarly cap-
tivating. He emits an intense passivity
(I realize the phrase makes little sense,
but you'll see what I mean when view-
ing the film) and captures Merton's
ambiguity perfectly. His body lan-
• guage can say "I want you" and "I
don't care about you" all at the same
time. Together, Bonham Carter and
Roache have dazzling chemistry.
Although The Wings of the Dove is
among the best films of the year, it
does have its weaker elements. Allison
Elliott's performance is considerably
less impressive than the efforts put
forth by the two leads. And the
▪ screenplay, at times, takes minimalism
to an extreme.
On occasion, I felt as though
important information had been omit-
ted from the story. For example, at
one crucial point, Kate writes a letter
to lure Merton to Venice, but the con-
tents of the missive are never revealed,
thus depriving the audience of a useful
detail in attempting to decipher
tr. Merton's motivation.
Nevertheless, The Wings of the Dove
is highly recommended. It is the type
of film that sticks with you long after
you leave the theater and provides
plenty to chew over in discussions
with friends and family. Portraying a
society where young adults are just
beginning to develop 20th-century
attitudes toward love and marriage,
the film is quite accessible to modern

viewers and teaches a lesson that is rel-
evant in any age: Be careful what you
wish for, it just might come true.
