While Lee is in the kitchen making
sure the food is prepared correctly and
comes out properly, owners Stuart,
Gary, Ron and Steve are loving being
more than investors ... In fact, few
evenings go by without at least one of
them being there.
It's a business venture and they're
having fun seeing people they know
enjoy themselves.
One of the times we were there was
on a Monday evening, normally a
slow night in the restaurant game ...
But Oakland Grill had folks galore
saying hello to each other ... Andy
Weiss called his duck "divine" and
wife Lenore Weiss said her grilled
baby lamb chops were superb ...
Finicky eater Harry Korman used the
"great" adjective in describing his
whitefish ... David Hermelin walked
from table to table, greeting people
and saying hello as Oakland Grill's
unofficial host.
Seating in the wide-open main din-
ing area is for 140 ... A cozy and corn-
fortable bar-lounge seats another 24,
plus 13 at the bar.
It has only been open since July 30,
but is becoming noted for its food, ser-
vice and warmth ... three ingredients
that will help put the label of success
on most any restaurant continuing to
provide this winning combination.
There used to be a time when, in
many instances, it took the likes of a
Les and Sam Gruber, or Sam Boesky
among so many others, to properly
run a restaurant ... They were restau-
rant people through and through.
Not anymore ... The restaurant
game today is big business ... Bigger
than ever before ... And it takes
shrewd businesspersons to make them
go ... Having restaurant knowledge is
an added plus.
Oakland Grill is not a toy for
Stuart, Gary, Ron, Steve ... They
have names to maintain ... and can-
not allow their reputations as success-
ful businessmen to flounder in what-
ever business venture they may par-
take.
Along with Chef Louai Sharkas,
the success of Oakland Grill rests
squarely on their shoulders ... and
they know it.
WHEN FINAL papers are signed,
the new Milk & Honey kosher dairy
restaurant by Unique Restaurant
Corporation is expected to take over
the present locale of Memphis Smoke
on Orchard Lake Road and Maple ...
(You can bet the mortgage that the pig
sign outside will go!)
