DAVID ARKIN, 97, of West

Bloomfield, died Oct. 28. Mr. Arkin
was the owner of Arkin Brothers Food
Distributors. He was a past master of
Perfection Lodge #486 F & AM and a
charter member of Temple Israel.
Mr. Arkin is survived by his daugh-
ters and son-in-law, Sylvia and Dr.
Marvin Gordon of Franklin, Charlotte
Arkin of Detroit; grandchildren, Susan
and Bruce Smith, Bob and Susan
Gordon; great-grandchildren, Jacob,
Evan and Bret Smith. Interment at
Beth El Memorial Park. Contributions

indicated that she is survived by her
daughter-in-law, Rochelle Sampson.

formerly of Birmingham of Ponte Vedra
Beach, Fla., died Oct. 28. She attended
Michigan State University, where she
was a National Merit Scholar. In
Detroit she was a fabric artist and pur-
sued a master of fine art degree at
Wayne State University. She was an
assistant editor for Vogue magazine.
Later, she managed and was part-owner
of Ralph Manuel Real Estate brokerage.
She was a vice president of the Women's
Division of the Jewish Federation as
well as a teacher of English to immi-
grants through the Jewish Vocational
Service. Mrs. Baker was a financial
planner with Porarro and
Associates/Allmerica Financial in
Florida.
She is survived by her husband,
William L. Baker; mother, Bertha K.
Martin of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; son,
Kurt Nicholas Wasserman of Amherst,
Mass., daughter and son-in-law, Amy
and Ted Wasserman Parfet of Novato,
Calif; brother, Alan Martin of New
York, N.Y.
Services were held at Hardage-
Giddens Funeral Home, 4115
Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, Fla.
Interment at Temple Cemetery,

SAM THOMAS BALKIN, former

Detroiter of San Bernadino, Calif, died
Nov. 2. He was active in B'nai B'rith,
the Masons, the Scottish Rite, the
Shriners as well as being an early mem-
ber of Congregation Beth Shalom.
He is survived by his wife of nearly
50 years, Paula; sons and daughters-in-
law, Herschel and Karen Balkin of
Poway, Calif., Michael and Debbie
Balkin of Farmington Hills; daughter
and son-in-law, Trudy and Howard
Jacobson of Chevy Chase, Md.; grand-
children, Elana, Ethan, Aaron, Avi,
Jeremy, Eli and Shira; brother and sis-
ter-in-law, Max and Betty Balkin of
Poway.

SAM BANKLER, 83, of N, Iest-

Bloomfield, died Nov. 3.
He is survived by his wife, Rose;
daughters, Ilene Rappaport of
Farmington Hills, Elyse Bankler of New
York City; sister and brother-in-law,
Ann and Joseph Shewach of Southfield;

grandchildren, Matthew, Megan and
Louis.

DR. DAVIS A. BENSON, 91, of
Southfield, died Nov. 1. Dr. Benson
graduated from the University of
Michigan Medical School in 1930. He
did his internship at St. Mary's Hospital
in Detroit and a residency in surgery at
Shore Road Hospital in New York. He
served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps
as a major, serving in_the European
Theater. Dr. Benson was in the practice
of internal medicine and served on the (-5
staffs of Mt. Carmel and Sinai hospitals;
he also did volunteer work at Northend
Clinic. Dr. Benson was a past president
of Congregation Shaarey Zedeles Men's
Club, served on the board of directors
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and
was a founding member of the seniors
group of that congregation. Dr. Benson
served as a board member of the Jewish
Home for Aged. In addition, he was a /-=,
life member of the American Medical
Association, the Michigan State Medical
Society and the Wayne County Medical
Society.
Dr. Benson is survived by his wife,
Esther Benson; daughter and son-in-
law, Sharon and Marvin Fleischman of
Bloomfield Hills; son and daughter-in-
law, Dr. Ronald M. and Linda R.
Benson of Ann Arbor; grandchildren,
Andrea and Dr. Mark Rubinstein,
Jeffrey and Denise Fleischman, Debra
and Clifford Migdal, Adam, Abigail,
Aaron Benson; great-grandchildren,
Renee, Erika, Eric, Howard, Elyse,
Amanda and Nicole.
Interment at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to a charity of one's choice.
