f Junior is acting cranky, he
might just be thirsty. That's
because mild dehydration can
manifest itself as fatigue and a
lack of alertness. It also can make lit-
tle ones headachy and fussy when it
comes time to eat.
But by the time kids get thirsty,
they're already dehydrated, says regis-
tered dietitian Susan Kleiner.
Drinking adequate amounts of water
helps children's bodies regulate tem-
perature, digest and absorb nutrients
in food, and remove waste products.
"To keep their hydration levels bal-
anced, infants and toddlers must take
in the same amount of fluid as they
lose," says Kleiner, adding that
because of their small body size, kids
tend to lose a larger percentage of
body fluids than adults.
Breast- and bottle-fed infants get all
the fluids they need, but after 6
months, parents should keep an eye
on tykes to make sure they're drinking
enough. For example, a child weigh-
ing 30 pounds should drink at least
five 8-ounce glasses of fluid during the
course of a day. Water, juice and milk
are fine; caffeinated soft drinks do not
count. Getting kids in the habit of
sipping fluids - whether they're thirsty
or not - will make it easy for them to
drink the recommended eight 8-
ounce glasses of water they'll need as
adults.
Kleiner recommends giving children
filtered water, which often tastes bet-
ter and removes harmful chemicals.
"Lead can be found in some houses
built before the 1980s and in commu-
nities with older pipes. This can be a
real problem for infants and smaller
children," says Kleiner. "Lead inter-
feres with mental and physical devel-
opment."
Filtration systems installed in the
home, as well as filtration pitchers like
those made by Brita, remove up to 95
percent of lead.
