ome people are thrilled that
Leah Rabin is coming to speak
at Temple Israel on Nov. 23.
Others are not.
Only one person agreed to talk on
the record about his disapproval of
Mrs. Rabin's visit. But several temple
members, who declined to be quoted,
say it's a bad move for the largest
Reform shul in town to host a woman
who has spoken negatively about other
Jews since the assassination of her hus-
band, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, two years ago, and who has
embraced Palestinian leader Yassir
Arafat.
Still, people are calling quickly to
reserve tickets for the three events with
Mrs. Rabin. Temple Israel is the only
place she will visit in Detroit. The
events, open to the community, coin-
cide with a photographic exhibit at the
temple of Yitzhak Rabin's life as a
diplomat in Washington.
Tickets cost $500 for a private 12:30
p.m. luncheon, at which attendees will
receive an autographed copy of her
book and be photographed with Mrs.
Rabin; tickets are $100 for a 3 p.m.
dessert reception and a handshake; or
$25 ($15 seniors and students) for
Mrs. Rabin's speech at 5 p.m.
Temple Israel has brought in well-
known speakers annually, including
Alan Dershowitz, Mario Cuomo and
the so-called "God Squad" (Rabbi
Mark Gellman and Monsignor Thomas
Hartman).
Marc Whitefield, a co-chair of the
Rabin event with U.S. District Court
Judge Bernard Friedman, says, "We try
to bring in speakers with relevant top-
ics. Certainly, Leah Rabin is a propo-
nent of peace, urging all people to find
a way to search for peace rather than
get into serious disputes."
Proceeds will go to Temple Israel's
Caring Community projects, including
a bereavement group, cancer support
group, shelter parties and help for peo-
ple with substance abuse.
There has been no opposition from

Detroit's Orthodox community,
Whitefield says, but rather from "a
Zionist organization" which sent a let-
ter to the temple's rabbis suggesting
that Rabin is anti-Israel.
"Rabbi Paul Yedwab was greatly
offended that anybody would suggest
that — the Rabins paid the ultimate
price," Whitefield said. "I think in
every democratic government people
should have a right to speak their
views."

admits that while Mr. Rabin's assassina-
tion "was a horrible crime ... I very
much wanted the people of Israel to
vote him out of office. He did commit
crimes against our people" with the
Oslo II accords.
Since her husband's death, Mrs.
Rabin has intimated "great affection for
Arafat, and she denounces those that
are against the peace process," Cutler
says.
Whitefield says most temple mem-
bers have responded "enthusiastically"
about the event.
"We're honored to have her. This is
a historic day for our little corner of the
world in West Bloomfield, Michigan,"
he says.
