Berenholz's father, Gustav, one of the
limited partners.
The relative calm of the event was
shattered when Ferber burst into the
sanctuary and accused Joseph
Berenholz of "spewing hatred."
Berenholz refused to allow him to
speak, but Ferber continued to rail
against him.
"The land was never given away! I
don't want you to lose the land!"
Ferber yelled.
Ferber later explained that he and
Shapiro have never really been given
the chance to address the congregation
about the property. He acknowledged
that they asked the board to raise $1.3
million, but only because it would be
in the congregation's best interest to
do so.
"It's not so hard to raise $1.3 mil-
lion because people would like to put
their names on a building. The land
was not meant to be sold so they can
subsidize their current way of life,
which is staying in the same building.
It was not meant to be lost to a bank,"
Ferber said.
He also called it "100 percent,
totally, unquestionably incorrect" that
the three general partners want to
develop the land with anything but a
synagogue.
In fact, Ferber said, he believes the
congregation should put its energy
into raising enough money to build a
synagogue, and he himself is willing to
finance the hiring of a full-time rabbi
to focus on fundraising.
"They're concentrating on throwing
money away," he said of the lawsuit.
"When I heard about [the lawsuit], I
had an upset stomach."
Grant Silver, a congregation board
member who attended Sunday's rally,
called Ferber's contentions "nonsense."
"It's just simply a ploy to delay,
confuse and divide. If those people
wanted to proceed, the deed is there.
The facts speak for themselves," he
said.
Former State Rep. Maxine Berman,
a B'nai David member who attended
the rally with her mother, Sophie,
called the legal dispute a "tragedy."
"I would still hope we could resolve
it. We're all mishpachah (family) —
the old B'nai David, the new B'nai
David. I don't think anyone who sup-
ported a lawsuit did it without a sick
stomach," she said.
