Rabbi Daniel B. Syme of Temple Beth
El, the survivor of a loved one's suicide,
will present "Reach for Hope," a dis-
cussion of suicide prevention, educa-
tion and awareness, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Dec. 2, in the West Bloomfield High
School Media Center.
Rabbi Syme developed this program
to help young people learn how to cope
with problems on a day-to-day basis,
without looking to suicide as an
option. Students of all ages, along with
their parents, are invited to attend.

CHAIM Holds
Essay Contest

CHAIM, Children of Holocaust-sur-
vivors Association In Michigan, invites
students (grades 9-12) from all schools
to which CHAIM has donated the
Holocaust curriculum Life Unworthy of
Life to participate in its 13th annual
essay competition.
Essays must address the topic:
"What made it possible for the
Holocaust to occur and why is the
study of the Holocaust relevant to stu-
dents today?" Entries should be 350-
1000 words and postmarked by Feb.
18. All essays must be submitted with
an official entry form that is co-signed
by a teacher.
The first place winner will receive
$100 and will read his/her essay at the
state's Holocaust Remembrance Day
program.

AIDS Quilt
Workshop

A workshop is scheduled to help com-
munity members create remembrance
panels for the National "Names
Project" AIDS Memorial Quilt, noon
to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at the
Canton Township Administrative
Building, just north of the public
library.
A quilt panel may be made in mem-
ory-of a friend or family member.
Registrants in the workshop will receive
advance assistance in selecting decora-

tive materials for panels and, at the
workshop, will be guided in panel
design and execution.
Finished panels will be dedicated on
World AIDS day, 7:30 p.m. Monday,
Dec. 1, at Cherry Hill United
Methodist Church, 321 South Ridge
Road, in Canton.
Advance registration for the panel-
making workshop is suggested. Call

register.
Sponsoring groups are Cherry Hill
United Methodist Church and
Congregation Bet Chaverim.

JPM JCC
Hosts Events

At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, and
12:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, Der
Purimshpiler will be shown at the
Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park. The film is a 1937 Polish film
with English subtitles. There is a
charge.
The Yiddish Culture Club, spon-
sored by the Charles and Frances
Driker Fund, will meet 1 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Jewish
Community Center of Oak Park. This
group of Yiddish entertainers and
Yiddish speakers is led by new
American Chaim Rosenthal. There is
no charge.
Banjo player Joe Sharpy will enter-
tain with popular songs as well as oldies
but goodies 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.
The program is free to JCC members.
Others will be charged a nominal fee.
On Mondays at 12:30 p.m., Vivian
Stollman, accompanied by Sony
Lipenholtz, leads the senior choir at the
Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park.
Fridays at 12:45 p.m., weekly erev
Shabbat services will take place at the
Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park. Cantor David Gutman will facili-
tate every week with prayers and songs.
There is no charge.
Socials are every Wednesday at 10
a.m. at the Jewish Community Center
in Oak Park. Music is provided by local
entertainers singing a variety of songs
including Yiddish. Call (248) 967-
4030 to participate. There is a small
charge.
Adult art classes are held every
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9
a.m.-noon. This is an ongoing begin-
ning class using various media. There is
a Jewish Community Center fee and
non-member fee, which include art
supplies.
