to so many aspects of our heritage. It
takes more than an article in the paper
to give us the depth and appreciation
of what these customs actually do for
us (and for the chickens, too).

Are Priorities
In Order?

After reading a local paper, I felt com-
pelled to write. The article was a result
of the "big publicity" given to the
recent contributions to the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra — including
some of the largest individual contri-
butions ever given to a Detroit arts
institution.
It went on to mention real estate
developer Samuel Frankel and his
wife, financier and philanthropist Max.
Fisher, Shirley Schlafer, and business-
man David Handleman and his wife.
In all due respect to the above
mentioned, I think it is a wonderful
thing to do for our city. But my
heart pains me deeply that in a large
city such as Detroit, these same con-
tributors do not address a much
more vital and important problem
— the lack of a decent Jewish nurs-

aged, for those among us who cannot
afford the astronomical fees a decent
nursing home costs for their dwin-
dling years.
Both Borman Hall and the Meyer
Prentis Manor were closed — not for
lack of census, but because they
could not be successfully brought up
to code to satisfy the city or the
Board of Health or the Citizens for
Better Care.
My aunt recently died; she was
confined to a nursing facility after
breaking her hip five years ago. After c'
visiting Borman Hall and Prentis,
whose conditions at the time were
appalling, I placed her in a private
nursing home, where both the
atmosphere and care were well main-
tained. Unfortunately, it was expen-
sive as well, and during her stay there
she managed to exhaust what little
funds she had managed to save as a
widow.
Though the facility was sympathet-
ic, they did not accept Medicaid; they
provided me with a list of other facili-
ties that did accept Medicaid.
Unfortunately, most Medicaid beds
are filled and there is a long waiting
list.
Yes, the Danto facility, near the
Jewish Center, is new and lovely; but
their medicaid beds were filled with
people transferred from Prentis when
that facility closed. They did say they
would take my aunt, provided she
would be on "private pay" — at
$4,500 a month — and at the end of
that time they would put her on
Medicaid. For 18 months, the total
would be $81,000, certainly more
than I had left of her funds and, I am
