or the sixth year, the social
action committee at
Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park will be funding care
packages for Jewish soldiers overseas,
this time for Chanukah.
Since the program started in
1991, the committee has sent pack-
ages to approximately 500 U.S.
troops in the Persian Gulf, Bosnia,
Japan and the Middle East.
"We've received the most heart-
warming letters from troops for the
work we've done," said Bea Sacks,
past chairperson of the committee.
"The temple got a plaque from
troops in the Pacific last year."

Rabbi David Lapp of the Jewish
Welfare Board purchases the candy
from Barton's for Jewish chaplains at
military stations worldwide to dis-
tribute to Jewish troops. Temple
Emanu-El is one of many groups
that funds the program.
"It's important to do this because
many men and women are far away,
without family, on the holidays,"
Sacks said. "It's a way to thank them
for their service."
In past years, the social action
committee has also sent care pack-
ages to Jewish troops for Passover.
Since the program started, according
to Sacks, several hundred people
have donated. ❑
