Eh... what's up?
account for 20 percent of my busi-
ness," said Adelson.
The remaining 10 percent includes
sales resulting from divorce, bankrupt-
cy, and other matters before the
courts.
Most of his business results from
word-of-mouth. "We've been around
for almost 20 years and everybody
knows us, everybody sees my signs,"
'said Adelson. "We actually did a lot of
rpromotional advertising for many
years to create an industry, a niche so
w speak, where people could recog-
nie this (service) was available.
"Ten years ago, if you asked people,
many of them didn't even know liqui-
dation sales were an option. But if you
ask people today, they say, 'Yes, we've
Len to an estate sale', or 'There was
'one by my house', or 'We read about
it in The Jewish News or in S ty le
Magazine."
* Another factor in Adelson's success
is that it has now become quite fash-
ionable to sell and buy household and
personal belongings thanks to highly-
publicized sales of objects once owned
by celebrities like Jacqueline Kennedy
Qnassis and Princess Diana.
It used to be embarrassing for a
wealthy family to sell their belongings
because people would get the wrong
impression. Today, it is trendy.
- "For many years, if you had 'stuff,'
you'd put it in the basement or you'd
give it to the Salvation Army or give it
to your kids and that's the end of it.
Gr you'd have a garage sale, where you
'realize about 10 percent of what the
stuff is worth," said Adelson.
This is my full-time occupation,
and not to throw rocks at my com-
pc;itors, but the fact is that most of
my competitors are either in the
antique business or in some other
business like real estate, and they do
Ithis to make extra money on the
weekend," Adelson said.
"We've brought the estate sale busi-
ess from medieval times into the
0th century by computerizing it, by
eating it as a real business and adver-
ti,-:ng it properly, providing signage
and covering the house properly," he
said.
Presentation is everything to
Adelson. "Behind the scenes there's a
1-. .:-., more going on than people think.
They think I work on the weekends
and that's it. I work every single day.
We go in a week before to price a
house. I have to set it up and it has to
look right. It has to flow properly.
'A lot of houses don't flow right,
eople can't get from room to room
