`from the endless flights on a
StairMaster or punishing daily step aer-
obic classes headed by nauseatingly
peppy instructors.
-! Robert Jacobs, a local executive, had
mastered a routine with weights, bicy-
cling and stair climbing machines. He
turned to yoga out of curiosity when he
heard it could enhance his workout.
While he lost 10 pounds ("and I was
a slim man to begin with"), the greater
payoff came in an unexpected way.
"I found that I was much more
relaxed not only during the workout
but also all day long," he said.
Carla Perkins, a former dancer,
knows what he is talking about.
Having trained for years in dance, she
switched to weight training and aero-
bics after sustaining a knee injury. Still,
she found yoga the most satisfying
workout for the mind and the body.
"Yoga is working the body to the
edge but not going over the edge," she
'-said. "I have never had such an inten-
sive workout as I do in ashtanga yoga.

all levels.

"But the beauty of it is that when I
walk out the door, I feel so much more
at ease," she said.
Zador also found this side benefit.
Once addicted to physically punishing
workouts, Zador gave up the stair
climbing machine for yoga because of
the mental and physical balance she
achieved.
"I don't know how many flights I
climbed, but it was enough to say I
owned the machine," she said.
"Through my practice of yoga phys-
ically I am balanced and stronger. I
heal quicker with less resistance. And
when I am done with practice, I am
able to go through the rest of my day
emotionally more balanced," she said.
"With the StairMaster, I couldn't say
that. I was a tired, sweaty, angry per-
- son."
She recently was contacted by a
rabbi at a local temple to teach a yoga
class in order to heighten Jewish spiri-
tuality. Zador, the daughter of
Holocaust survivors, said she hopes to
use this avenue to explore certain
aspects of her Judaism.
"We haven't discussed the details,
L) but it sounds like a wonderful proposal
and a great application of yoga," she
said. ❑
