ver since I was a child, I have
been fascinated by anything
related to outer space.
I remember sitting in front of the
TV and watching the first moon
landing in July, 1969.
Ron Howard made the hit movie
Apollo 13 in the 1990s. I, howev-
-,wer, way ahead of my time, created
a scrapbook of newspaper clip-
pings during the actual crisis in
April, 1970, when I was 10.
It's not surprising, then, that our 6-
~ year-old son Yossi has developed a
similar interest. We've already
been to the Kennedy Space Center
in Florida; he wakes up early or
stays up late to watch shuttle
launches and landings on the
NASA channel; and he is counting
wthe days until he is old enough to
attend Space Camp. Fortunately
for Yossi, and for you and your chil-
dren, it's no longer necessary to cut
out newspaper articles to stay con-
011.-
nected to the space program.
Instead, via the World Wide Web,
you can actually communicate with
—the astronauts aboard missions,
track the progress of the flights,
and learn, in incredible detail,
about the science experiments con-
ducted on board.
id' I found two, well-organized
launch pads for your journey to the
universe of space-related Web
sites. The NASA home page is
located at http://www.nasa.gov,
and the NASA Office of
Spaceflight home page is at
http://www.osf.nasa
.gov/welcome.html.
Both provide a well-organized
and detailed menu of options.

Basically because I found it first, I
chose the NASA home page as my
"PLP" (personal launch pad).
The lead story on the NASA
page focuses on the Cassini space-
craft, recently launched on a multi-
year mission to Saturn. Click on the
image of the spacecraft and off
you go to explore more information
regarding the mission and the plan-
et Saturn than you can absorb in
two lifetimes. You'll learn about the
spacecraft itself; the purpose of the
mission; and view an array of
images showing everything from
the loading of spacecraft to pic-
tures of the launch.
Fasten your seat belts because
with one click of your mouse you
will journey through millions of miles
of space to the red planet Mars.
There are two U.S. spacecraft on
and around Mars. The Mars
Global Surveyor is orbiting the
planet, mapping and photograph-
ing its red surface. The Sojourner is
the little crawler, actually moving
about on the surface.
The Global Surveyor site, pre-
dictably, has detailed information
about the spacecraft, its mission
and the planet itself. Using the real-
time capabilities of the Web, it
provides second-by-second informa-
tion about the spacecraft's speed
and orbit.
Finally, from the NASA home
page you can explore a' variety of
Space Shuttle and Mir-related sites.
Periodically, you can even ask
questions of the astronauts and cos-
monauts on board and, with use of
the Real Audio Player software, lis-
ten in on the actual communica-
tions between Mission Control and
the astronauts in space. ❑
