which I returned several times during
my visit.
Eastern Berlin itself is becoming
much more appealing to tourists.
before the Berlin Wall came down, it
was isolated and bleak. But now it's
becoming a trendy area with fashion-
able boutiques, new construction and
luxury hotels (three others besides the
Hilton) and a new energy and vitality
in the air.
One of the liveliest places in Eastern
Berlin is the old Jewish neighborhood,
the Scheunenviertel, a popular place
with lively cafes, avant-garde art events
and a decidedly Jewish flavor.
On Orananienburger, the heart of
the area, stands one of the city's most
famous landmarks, the beautifully
- restored New Synagogue, with its
gleaming domes visible from blocks
away. With the synagogue as a mag-
net, the entire street has become a
c',ively center of activity.
Not far from the synagogue is the
Mendelson Cafe deliberately given its
name to add cachet, even though the
cuisine is continental but not Jewish.
L And just around the corner is the Beth
Cafe, which is strictly kosher.
Right next door to the synagogue is
Cafe Oren, which specializes in Israeli
cuisine and has become one of the
most popular restaurants in all of
Berlin. Oren was named one of the
top four restaurants in Berlin in a
recent article in Hemispheres, the
I -, American Airlines magazine. It's got-
ten other rave reviews, too, and exten-
sive television coverage.
"Israeli food is very popular in
Berlin," says Jossi Latte, the friendly
co-owner who, like his partner Danny
=Metzger, is an Israeli native. Their
restaurant has a distinctive Israeli
ambiance, with menorot on display,
imported Israeli wines available even
-,Israeli newspapers in the magazine
rack and, of course, Israeli specialties
on the menu, which is printed in
Hebrew, German and English.
No wonder it's a favorite with
many of the estimated 1000 Israelis
(who live in Berlin and with other
Berliners, too. "People are getting
more and more interested in Jewish
culture, and in this neighborhood
especially," says Latte, who notes that
down the street from Cafe Oren, a
privately owned Jewish culture center
is in the planning stage.
This city which was at one time the
headquarters of the Nazis is now a
cosmopolitan European capital which
is wide open to Jewish culture and to
Jewish visitors. ❑
