Gattaca has stripped spaces, inhabited 7:Hi
by cerebral achievers who dress like
(
GQ models for funeral wear. The
most elegant elitist is Uma Thurman
as Irene, a work of genetic art.
She suspects Vincent/Jerome,
and that excites her, stirs the demure
streak of revolt in her. But writer and
director Niccol treats the romance as
a vapor trail, forlorn and whispery.
This desexes Thurman, and since her
humor is mostly gone, too, she
becomes a sleek accessory to Jan
Roelf's design and Slawomir Idziak's
photography.
Hawke, also, despite some James
Deanish moments, seems cryogeni-
cally wrapped in the vistas of impec-
cable style. He doesn't really look
much like Jerome, and never even
tries to fake Jerome's British accent.
Niccol doesn't rely on violence or
"cool" attitude, and shows some wit
(genetically coded hairs are
exchanged by the budding lovers).
But he falls back, just as the romance
warms a bit (and as we are touched
by Jude Law as the real, agonized
Jerome), into the boyish rivalry of the
brothers. This is trite, well below the
Corsican Brothers, way below the
Karamazovs.
There also may be audience resis-
tance to Vincent's dream, which
Niccol intends to be poignant: a rebel --
with a cause. But Vincent is less a
rebel than a desperate mole seeking
entry, who wants to join the in-
group. He yearns to rocket to a moon -
of Saturn, described as a ball of
smoke. Imagine leaving Frank Lloyd
Wright behind for a smoking lounge
in Gary, Ind.
Part of us (and Wright would
agree) wants Vincent and Irene to
flee their destiny as H.G. Wells space
cadets. They should light out for the
territory, like Huck Finn, and make

some babies the old-fashioned way.
