(just how much British ale was guz-
zled on this film?). You've got to be a
bit soused going into a movie like
this to love it, but if you don't love it,
; -there is a consolation prize: Cameron
Diaz.
She's got a bad hair job -in one
episode, which ages her a decade, and
a dumb wig in another. But she has a
winning ability to cover her bets, to
turn jokers into aces, and she beats the
movie at its scattered game.
As in Feeling Minnesota, we get the
sense that Diaz is better than her given
,frmaterial; she is certainly a stronger
presence than McGregor, whose star
shine is boyishly twinkling.
While he's simply being cute, Diaz
is being peachy and yummy and ...
but don't let me get started again.

Gattaca looks major. Its flaws do not
keep it from being one of the year's
most beautiful constructions.
Set in "the not-too-distant future,"
Andrew Niccol's movie was filmed
among the futuristic buildings of
today. The best site is Frank Lloyd
Wright's Marin County Civic Center,
almost 40 years old but still a model
for the next century (a warmer model
than, say, the new Getty Center in
L.A.).
Niccol's theme is basic sci-fi. In a
society stratified by advances in
genetic breeding, the resultant caste
system divides those born engineered,
potentially "perfect," from those born
the old, careless way, fraught with fal-
libility. For Vincent, played in matu-
