E. of Greenfield, Berkley I There is nothing like a dame, as sailors sometimes sing. And for a movie like A Life Less Ordinary, there is nothing like a dame like Cameron Diaz. My, but she does concentrate atten- tion. Diaz manages to be peachy and yummy and all those old, sexy (don't say sexist) virtues, without seeming a retro airhead. Even though the script is sometimes airheaded, Diaz is in there being peachy and yummy and ...you get the drift. She's Celine, an heiress so spoiled and bored she shoots apples off the heads of servants, or suitors. Her father is a billionaire tyrant, played by Ian Holm with a permafrosted soul. He and his daughter don't seem from given a last chance by the Divine One-y_ to mate up the odd couple, Robert and Celine. Delroy Lindo and Holly Hunter play the angels, who seem happiest when they can be ruthless bounty hunters, thus twisting the con-- cept "angel" well beyond the theology of Billy Graham. Everything's twisted in A Life Less Ordinary. It comes from the British team that did Trainspotting (McGregor, director Danny Boyle, etc.), with the hurl-it-hard style now mostly shorn of nauseating plumbing, but crammed with whimsy. It tries hard to be American and road-hip and Tarantino, or like an old Michael Powell film fantasy rewired in devotion to Fargo (there's also a streak of Big Night, due to the presence of 548-3650 DAILY LUNCH & DINNER SPECIALS PIZZA - RIBS - FISH ROUND PIZZA SQUARE PIZZA HOMEMADE GARLIC BREAD SMALL OR LARGE SMALL - MED - LARGE ON FOOD PURCHASES OF $6 OR MORE DINING ROOM, CARRY-OUT • 1 COUPON PER TABLE • ONLY ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE • NO SEPARATE CHECKS JN • EXPIRES 12-31-97 • COUPON NOT VALID WITH DAILY SPECIALS - ----------- I I I I I I MIN - FALAFIL A SPECIALITY Open 7 Days Lunch & Dinner Restaurant ❑ QUALITY ❑ ATMOSPHERE ❑ VALUE Mideastern & American Cuisine 27060 Evergreen at 1-696 & 11 Ewan McGregor and the yummy Cameron Diaz in A Life Less Ordinary. The old creep has just fired a clean- ing man in the office, Robert (Ewan McGregor), in favor of a robot. You get the feeling he'd robotize Celine if he could, if only to save on apples. Robert comes up to the big office in a snitty rage, though he's really a shy bumbler. Celine, amused, shows him how to be a little macho. And then they run off, supposedly on a kidnapping caper for daddy's ransom money. Celine keeps showing Robert how to be macho, which is why, as she starts falling in love with him — he has tousle-haired charm and a Brit-boy accent — it seems rather farfetched. He's no Cary Grant, or even Pierce Brosnan. The movie has a framing device about two heavenly angels, cherubs of romance, who keep fouling up and are Holm, Stanley Tucci and, very funny with just one speech, Tony Shalhoub). The movie is a grainy piling of moments, which really good movies aren't. Too many moments sweat from strain, but others work engagingly (just how that cocktail mixes is up to -- you, almighty consumer). There is a "madcap" road chase with Holly Hunter bouncing wild even more than she does in Raising Arizona. And a swell country bar scene where Celine and Robert suddenly torch-up their romance with a jubilant karaoke version of Beyond the Sea, maybe the funniest scene of this sort since Pee-wee Herman revived Tequila in Pee wee's Big Adventure. There are bits (from Maury Chaykin as a prissy hayseed) sugges- tive of Jonathan Winters, others that are vaguely Preston Sturges, and some that seem tossed in on a beery gamble - A LIFE LESS ORDINARY page 115
