Jews is important." One of her sisters-
in-law, a non-Jew, didn't want to raise
her children as Jews because of what
seem to be unconsciously anti-Semitic
views — "Why would you want to
raise kids Jewish and put all of that
baggage on them?"
Despite any potential for uncon-
scious anti-Semitism, my father believes
that it's important for intermarriages to
take place. He says that once everyone
has a Jewish relative, they can't possibly
remain anti-Semitic. I say if the relative
is a jerk, it will do more harm than
good, but that's getting off topic again.
Not all of my friends who qualify as
"young Jews" think that anti-Semitism
is worse. My friend Nina strongly
believes that intermarriage is a far
greater threat to American Jews than
anti-Semitism. Her rationale was that
children of an intermarriage are less
likely to be raised as Jews, remain Jews
as adults or marry Jews. Eventually,
according to her, there won't be any
Jews left if this keeps up.
I cringe every time I'm in a secular

situation and a fellow Jew does some- (--
thing that perpetuates the negative
stereotype of Jews. I firmly believe that
the voluntary creation of ghettos —
"Jewish neighborhoods" — is a grave
danger, since it doesn't give children the
chance to deal with anti-Semitism in a
positive way early in life. My friends
who grew up in entirely Jewish com-
munities were completely unable to
cope with anti-Semitism encountered
on the job.
Well, big deal, There will always be
anti-Semitism, and there will always b6--7
intermarriage. It doesn't really matter
which is worse because both are prob-
lems. At least intermarriage does have
some good things going for it.
Intermarriage exposes more people to F-2
"real" Jews instead of the stereotypes
some non-Jews know, widens the gene
pool, can provide the community with
new leaders, and presumably occurs
because two people love each other and -
want to share their lives with each
other. I can't find one good thing to say
about anti-Semitism. ❑

during the Holocaust. Those who sur-
vived described in the renewal of com-
mitment to world-wide Torah study
their personal vision of victory against a
foe that saw in the burning of the
Talmud the secret to the eradication of
the Jewish soul.
The awesome response of tens of
thousands of heightened voices to the
words of the Kaddish turned the
memorial prayer into a pledge that we
would never forsake our God nor the
covenant that we accepted on Mount
Sinai. I held my father's hand on one
side and my son's on the other. The
Jewish people live.
As I gazed upon the satellite-trans-
mitted pictures of the jubilation across
the globe, it became more and more
apparent that there were pictures miss-
ing: a lot of them. Millions of Jews,
many times the numbers in the colise-
ums and arenas were not part of the
celebration. Their images were fading
and their vision blurring. It was sud-
denly very painful.
We have survived well beyond every
other people and tongue. What is the
secret to that survival? It is our
covenant with God that promises us
that we will continue as long as we
maintain our commitment to our
Torah. Every group that has not shaped

their Judaism and their lives around the
Talmud has disappeared. They are
gone. When was the last time you
attended a Karaite bar mitzvah or a
Sadducean wedding?
From the beginning of recorded
Judaism, every one of the thousands of
authors of Jewish responsa literature
based their directives of Jewish life
upon the godly foundation of Torah
and its core system of Jewish beliefs.
It was impossible not to feel the joy
of our God. It was also palpable, that
pain of seeing the pictures fading away
of so many Jews who don't have a clue
what the Torah of their ancestors is all
about. When the next celebration takes
place, how many more souls will be
totally out of the picture?
The Talmud has so much to offer. I
and a group of my colleagues have put
together a speakers bureau of individu-
als who have spent thousands of hours
in the study of Talmud. We are interest-
ed in allowing more Jews into the main
arena of Jewish life.
Call us at the Young Israel of
Southfield, (248) 358-0514. The only
charge is the electricity that comes from o
reuniting with our past and the excite-
ment of connecting it to our future.
That future will put us back into the
Palace, the real one in Jerusalem. El
