of the Jewish community of St. Croix
in the Virgin Islands; at Conservative
Camp Ramah in Palmer, Mass.; at the
Reform Religious Action Center in
Washington; and at the Pardes Institute
in Jerusalem.
He was the first rabbi in the St.
Croix Jewish community's 200-year
history. "There had been a Jewish com-
munity there from the Revolution until
the Civil War, and then again from the
late 1950s or so; the synagogue was
established in the '70s," he says. At 24
years old, Dobb led High Holidays ser-
vices days after Hurricane Marilyn
struck in September of 1995.
"I found a wonderful community of
people," he says. Most were from the
States, with a handful of natives. "The
continentals were the mainstay of the
community; everyone had a story that
brought them there, and everyone was
searching for community.
"Even though it's a U.S. territory, it
often feels like a Third World country,
with a lot of poverty and racial issues.
It's a different language — not just a
different dialect. You open the prayer-
- book and realize how Northeast-centric
[it] is: The leaves turn, and so we turn
to teshuvah.' The leaves don't turn in St.
Croix."
Dobb graduated from
Reconstructionist Rabbinical College
last June, poised to fill a position which
he basically already held — spiritual
leader of Adat Shalom in Rockville,
Md.
"During my third year of RRC, I
started coming to [Washington] once a
month as a student rabbi, to work with
Rabbi Sid Schwarz, the founding rabbi
of this community. When Sid
announced that he was stepping down
to do the Washington Institute for
Jewish Leadership and Values full-
time," they offered Dobb an interim
one-year position. A year later he was
hired permanently.
Adat Shalom serves the Washington
area, including Maryland and Virginia
suburbs; the 260-household congrega-
‘ don davens at the Jewish Community
Center in Rockville, awaiting construc-
tion on property it has already pur-
chased.
Dobb considered law, environmental
activism and other careers, but chose
the rabbinate because it allowed him to
do all of those things. "I'm a generalist,
and with the rabbinate I knew I'd not-
, have to pin myself down."
What he likes best about it is "the
opportunity to meet people when
they're most open — it's incredibly
meaningful."
