farputst (very dressy).
-The laminated placemats featured a
photographic montage of guests on
one side and somehow fit the menu
on the other. It featured herring, liver,
kishka, knishes, roast brisket and
chicken, stuffed cabbage, salmon pat-
ties, potato latkes, kasha varnishkes,
tzimmes — "all the Yiddish things I
remember from my bubbies and zay-
des," Marylin said.
The lifelike centerpieces, by sculp-
tor Mitzi Jacobs, beckoned guests with
sayings like, "A nickel a schtickel,"
(five cents for a chunk of salami).
After soup and appetizers, the 91
guests moved into the kitchen at the
Stage to serve themselves, and then
danced to the strains of klezmer music
by - Rennie Kaufman. They were also
treated to a movie depicting highlights
of the Wohlman marriage and
moments in their own lives. Marylin
wrote a song that was recorded and
played with the film. A round of
toasts, some of them in Yiddish, was
made.
For dessert, guests managed to stuff
down halavah, mandelbroit cookies,
seven-layer cake, rugelach, cheesecake
and more. Couples left with a gift -of a
mazel keychain.
"It was warm and frailech and it
was Yiddish. I haven't had a piece of
maatje herring in 30 or 40 years,"
Marylin said.
The Wohlmans were married Nov.
2, 1947, at the Wilshire Hotel in
Detroit. They have two
sons, Steven (Gayle) and
Donald and one grand-
child, Melissa.
