THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE
The Devil's Advocate has a premise
that most thinking people can accept:
Satan is a lawyer.
And since Satan is "a lawyer played
by Al Pacino, we can enjoy a lot of his
mischief Pacino doesn't act anymore.
e grandstands, extravagantly. He's a
showman, jacking up his short stature
with foxy vocal tricks, his proven
charisma, his wolfish grin. As evil
lawyer John Milton — named for the
rear poet of fallen angels — the grin
beams from a pale, waxy face that
looks loaned from Madame Tussaud's.
Milton heads a vastly connected
ew York firm, full of legal eagles
with vulture minds and vampy, power-
dish lawyerettes. He lures from God-
fearing Florida a decent yet driven
attorney, the young wizard of jury
election Kevin Lomax, for a cam-
paign of diabolic seduction suitable
for the millennium.
Lomax is played by Keanu Reeves,
so sleek and oily he's ballistic. Kevin
ves his adorable wife, Mary Ann
(Charlize Theron), but he's even more
vulnerable than she to the lures of
New York, the parties and apartments
and clothes and buzz of importance.
lind ambition leads him into a mur-
der case defending a bad developer
(Craig T Nelson).
Too soon, the swank of success
turns to soul rot, nasty cover-ups,
wd 4 passes by the vamps and Mary
Ann losing her mind after too much
bewildered decorating of their deluxe
apartment.
Pacino is fun, Reeves dutiful and
heron sadly wiped out, while the
story is too much a long, labored
gizmo to cast a spell. Rated R.
