nightclub full of crooks, tootsies,
druggies and go-gos.
When a thug is gunned down,
Sands' medical instincts return. He
swiftly rigs a lifesaving rescue before
the awed swingers. Most awed, or
glazed, is Claire (Angelina Jolie), the
superbly built companion of cocky,
post-modernist sociopath Ray
Blossom.
That would be Timothy Hutton,
with golden hair dreaming of Brad
Pitt, icicles of attitude suspended from
every line, and a devotion to Claire
that is exceeded only by his compul-
sive taste for murder and treachery.

Sands becomes Ray Blossom's pet
doctor, available for breezy, impro-
visatory surgery. He even plugs up a
chest hole in Claire, which is not
merely life-threatening, but has
drained the blood (or at least the lip-
stick) from her astonishing, love-ban-
quette lips. Angelina Jolie, who
appears to have had implants in her
lips, is so lushly lippy that she could
leak a quart of collagen and still be a
rest haven for monarch butterflies.
Debut-directed with flaunting zip
by Andy Wilson, the movie is about
how the good doctor learns to practice
medicine again, shake off heroin (like
a bad cold) and become one tough
dude. Filmed with a veneer that can
flatter itself as style, Playing God zigza-
gs into that reliable climax, a car chase
through downtown Los Angeles. In
the Tarantino mode of progress, not a
single vegetable stand or bag lady's
shopping cart is hit — and if Angelina
