New At Sweet Dreams

lacking relief, it's tragic.
Catherine dreams of liberation,
then personifies the dream in Morris
Townsend (Ben Chaplin), suddenly
smitten by her. Morris is handsome,
smart and poor, and Austin smugly
assumes he is a fortune hunter. Never
mind that Catherine blossoms in
romance, and that Morris' affection
seems genuine. Austin cannot value
Catherine except in orbit, a moon to
his cold sun.
Holland is in debt but not bondage
to her source. After Europa, Europa,
Olivier, Olivier and now this, why not
simply say that Holland is one of the
best directors in the world? The
story's ending is one of the most res-
onatingly charged in any film, a vision
of a sobering and costly victory. It
couldn't work so well without its star,
who has often been remarkable.
Maybe Jason Leigh can win an Oscar
for the same role that won it for De
Havilland. Rated PG.

Some movies were born for the
afterlife of video. Such a film is
Playing God, which is not a sequel to
there is not a single

but another generic pillaging of the
old noir stockpile, with a trendy
Quentin Tarantino twist.
David Duchovny, lean and calmly
cadenced star of TV's "The X-Files," is
not at all a bad actor; he has a certain
streamlined charisma. Still, he mostly
plays the role of disgraced Dr. Eugene
Sands like Richard Gere on Buddhist
retreat.
Sands fell from high-paid medical
glory after he became a drug addict
and messed up an operation. Now,
